About Bill Stirling

Born in Gainesville, Florida in 1942, Bill Stirling is the son of an itinerant Episcopal minister and a poet/teacher. Living all over the South as a child and he graduated from the University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee, cum laude in 1964, with a Political Science major and an English minor. After serving in the Peace Corps he became an English Civics teacher in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City - founding numerous programs for dropouts and veterans, while getting an M.A.T. in urban education from Montclair State University, N.J.

Bill moved to Aspen in 1972, on a self-styled sabbatical from east coast teaching with every intention of returning to NYC, but he succumbed to his adoration for Aspen - starting Stirling Homes, Inc., a real estate brokerage, property management and real estate company in 1978. Over thirty years later he merged with Peak Properties to become Stirling Peak Properties - and then joined forces with Douglas Elliman in 2016.

Bill has served as president of the Aspen Board of Realtors, was Realtor of the Year, VP of the Colorado Association of Realtors, and Mayor of Aspen. Through his community involvement, Bill has gained an unparalleled knowledge of Aspen's planning process, land use codes and historic preservation guidelines. He is known as a progressive thinker and a passionate patron of the arts. Bill personifies, "real estate expertise with character."

In 1986 married the love of his life, Katharine Thalberg, who was a writer, radical feminist, animal rights activist, and founder/operator of Explore Booksellers and Bistro, which was Aspen's cultural and literary center. She died in January 2006 after a long bout with cancer.

Bill is a life-long political activist - supporting influential figures like Jesse Jackson and Obama, as well as serving as Mayor of Aspen from 1983-91. He co-founded the Community Office of Resource Energy in 1994, aka CORE, and devotes time away from his business to changing the currents of climate change and other significant environmental causes.

An enthusiastic skier, hiker, tennis player, and golfer, as well as an animal rights activist. Is a voracious reader and lover of classical music, rock and roll and independent films. He still introduces authors and leads book discussions for the new owners of Explore Booksellers in his spare time. He has a wonderful life partner, Barbara Bussell, who is a photographer of religious pilgrimages and former Aspen art gallery owner.
